The 190th birth anniversary of social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was celebrated grandly in manthani on Monday. Minister for Finance and Civil Supplies Etala Rajender inaugurated the statue of the social reformer at hanuman nagar manthani. He stressed on the need to do away with the caste system for the progress of the country.
MLC Bhanu prasadh, Minister Etala Rajender , Zilla Parishad chairperson Tula Uma, MLA Putta Madhu and others garlanded the statue of Phule and paid tributes.
Etala Rajender said as per the aspirations of the social reformer, every individual should get education to usher in social equality.
Zilla Parishad chairperson Tula Uma said that it was Jyothiba who had played an exemplary role to bring about changes in the age old feudal society by starting literacy campaign for women. He began the campaign by educating his wife Savithri Bai Phule against all odds some 175 years ago. By championing the cause of women and advocating social reforms he had become the Mahatma even earlier to the Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi, they said.
